The Ultimate Straight Boom Lift Dimensions and Size Guide

Updated July 23, 2024

Providing both horizontal and vertical reach, straight boom lifts, also called telescopic boom lifts, are a type of construction lift that provides stability and allows workers to access extremely high elevations. Slightly different than articulating boom lifts, telescopic boom lifts don't have bendable arms that can maneuver around obstacles. If you're looking for a more flexible boom lift, you can check out our articulating boom lift dimensions and size guide. And if you just need vertical reach, feel free to read our scissor lift dimensions and size guide.

There are many factors to consider when selecting the right boom lift for your construction project including vertical and horizontal reach, width, and lift capacity. In this guide, we've provided an overview of the most important specs for straight boom lifts across all the major telescopic boom lift brands including Genie, Haulotte, JLG, MEC, Skyjack, and more. Feel free to skip ahead to each brand or size using the table of contents below.

The "XC" series refers to the machine's ability to carry extra capacity, while the "DC" and "FE" models are their electric and hybrid models, respectively. Lastly, the "J" in the model name refers to whether the machine has an additional jib which is often 6 feet long. The number in the model name represents the machine's vertical reach.

What is the tallest Genie boom lift?

With platform heights ranging from 46' to 132;, their height range is lower than other brands. However, Haulotte boom lifts are still suitable for many applications including railway and shipyard construction, tree scaping, window washing, and more and have platform capacities that are consistent with their competitors. Where they fall short is having electric models. As for their names, the number in the model name refers to the platform height of the machine.

What is the tallest Haulotte boom lift?

JLG

JLG is another well-known boom lift brand that has several models that are well-suited for different project types. With heights ranging from 40' to 186' they have one of the wider ranges of option whether you're working on a 4 storey or 18 storey building.

Following the standard naming convention the first two numbers in a JLG boom lift name refer to the platform height of the machine. As for the letters, the "SC" series is their crawler series meaning the lift is configured with tracks instead of wheels. The "SJC" series is similar except it it has a 6-foot jib attachment giving them slightly more reach. All models with the letter "J" in the model name have the attached jib. The "SJP" models have a jib that also has 180 degrees of articulation for enhanced maneuverability.

Lastly, there is the "HC" models which are high-capacity, able to lift more weight than their other booms. They have six high-capacity models including the 400S HC3, 460SJ HC3, 600S HC3, 660SJC HC3, 800S HC3, and 800S HC3, which all have maximum platform capacities of 1,000 pounds.

What is the tallest JLG boom lift?

MEC

MEC offers several telescoping boom models, which are tough, dependable, and include multiple operational features. However, these models are limited in platform height as their largest model reaches a peak height of only 85'. Despite their size, MEC straight boom lifts have some of the largest platform capacities amongst other brands. MEC's two Titan models, the 60-S and 40-S, can lift 3,000 and 4,000 lbs of weight, respectively, giving the best platform capacity of all telescopic boom lifts currently. In a way, the two Titan models act like a telescopic boom and scissor lift combination. The models with a "J" in their names feature an additional job, providing them with additional reach.

Skyjack

Skipjack's straight boom lifts, which are built for the rental industry, are a great option for smaller projects since their platform heights range from 40' to 86'. All six models have considerable horizontal reach for their size, which ranges from 34' to 76'. Similar to Manitou, the "+" in the name signifies that they have additional platform capacities while the number represents their maximum platform height.

Snorkel

Snorkel has the widest range of telescopic booms with platform heights ranging from 40' to 210', which is the tallest in the industry. The "All Terrain" series are equipped with tracks and are built for tougher and softer environments. Models with the letter "J" have an additional 6' jib attached, providing additional reach. The one place Snorkel doesn't meet demand are the heights between 130' and 210', making brands like Genie or JLG better for this range.

What is the tallest Snorkel boom lift?

The tallest Snorkel boom lift is the 2100SJ which has a platform height of 210' and a horizontal reach of 115'. It is also the tallest boom lift in the world.

The Most Important Straight Boom Lift Specifications

Now that we've covered the different telescopic boom lifts by brand and by size, it's important to break down why platform and working height, horizontal reach, width and length, platform capacity, and engine type are the specifications that matter most for contractors when renting on purchasing a boom lift.

Platform Height

Platform height, also known as the vertical reach, is crucial for contractors because it determines the maximum elevation the boom lift can reach, ensuring it meets the specific job requirements. Knowing the height limitations of the machine helps in planning and executing tasks safely and efficiently, avoiding the need for additional equipment. Additionally, understanding platform height ensures compliance with safety regulations and helps in managing rental or purchase costs effectively by selecting the right equipment for the job.

Working Height

Working height is important for contractors to know because it includes both the platform height and the additional reach of the operator standing on the platform, typically around 6 feet above the platform. This measurement ensures that the lift can provide the necessary access for the operator to perform tasks at higher elevations. Knowing the working height helps in selecting the right equipment to meet safety standards and job requirements, avoiding potential inefficiencies and hazards.

Horizontal Reach

Horizontal reach is important to know because it determines how far the boom lift can extend horizontally from its base. This is crucial for accessing hard-to-reach areas without needing to reposition the lift frequently, improving efficiency and productivity. Understanding the horizontal reach ensures the equipment can navigate obstacles and reach work areas safely, making it essential for planning and executing tasks effectively.

Machine Width

Machine width is important because it affects the ability of the boom lift to maneuver through tight spaces and access confined areas on the job site. Knowing the width ensures that the lift can pass through doorways and other narrow passages without difficulty. This information is crucial for planning the equipment's movement and positioning, enhancing safety and efficiency by preventing damage to property and ensuring smooth operations. This is especially important when working in indoor venues or job sites that are close to pedestrian areas.

Machine Length

Machine length is important for contractors to know because it affects the maneuverability and storage of the boom lift on the job site. Knowing the machine's length helps in planning its transportation, ensuring it can fit on transport vehicles and within the worksite's layout. It also aids in determining the space required for safe operation and positioning, preventing potential obstructions and enhancing overall job site efficiency.

Platform Capacity

Platform capacity is important for contractors to know because it determines the maximum weight the boom lift platform can safely support, including workers, tools, and materials. Ensuring the platform capacity meets job requirements is crucial for maintaining safety standards and preventing overloading, which can lead to equipment failure or accidents. There are often two capacities on boom lifts: restricted and unrestricted. These capacities will change depending on how far the platform is extended vertically or horizontally, so it's always a good idea to know these range of motions before operating the machine. There is often a chart or image on the boom lift that will indicate the lift's range of motion. Knowing the capacity also helps in planning the tasks effectively, ensuring that the necessary personnel and equipment can be lifted without exceeding the machine's limits.

Engine Type

Engine type is important for contractors to know because it affects the boom lift's performance, fuel efficiency, and suitability for different work environments. Diesel engines are typically more powerful and suitable for outdoor, rough terrain jobs, while electric engines are quieter, produce no emissions, and are ideal for indoor or environmentally sensitive areas. Understanding the engine type helps contractors select the right equipment for the job, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and optimizing operational efficiency. Most telescopic boom lifts are diesel but there is an emerging demand for electric models like the Genie S-60 DC, JLG EC600SJ, and JLG EC600SJP.

What Is The Tallest Boom Lift in the World?

The tallest boom lift in the world is the Snorkel 2100SJ which can reach 210' vertically, and 115' horizontally, and lift up to 1,000 pounds.
